Fish Pie - Baby-Led Weaning (BLW)


I used the cornflour method to make the sauce for this recipe which is super easy/less laborious than making a roux etc.

FOR BABIES - Cut the deboned fish into chunks for grabbing or flake it once cooked depending on your child.

2 large potatoes, peeled and diced
20g unsalted butter
20g cornflour
2 spring onions, chopped
50g grated cheese
300ml milk
A pinch of black pepper
125g white fish, deboned (I used a mix of cod/haddock)
1/2 a cup of peas


  1. Put the potatoes into a large pot of boiling water and boil for 10 mins until cooked.

  2. Meanwhile, set your oven to 200C/395F. Put a smaller pot on a medium heat and add all of the ingredients except for the fish and peas.

  3. Mix well and continue to stir until the ingredients combine and the sauce thickens (approx 5 mins).

  4. Put your fish and peas into the sauce and mix well.

  5. Take an ovenproof dish and put the fish mixture into it.

  6. Take the potatoes off the boil, drain them and mash. Add a splash of milk and a little unsalted butter if desired.

  7. Top the fish mixture with the mash and use a fork to fluff/spike up the mash.

  8. Place in the oven and cook for 20-25 mins until golden on top and bubbling.

  9. Leave to cool a little and serve alone or with steamed vegetables!

ALTERNATIVE TWIST - try different types of fish (watch out as smoked fish can be salty for babies), or even add some prawns.

VEGETARIAN TWIST - put in whatever vegetables you like! Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and beans work well.
